“Crocker’s work challenges the viewer to unlock the text, and to consider how its meaning is delivered and enhanced by the materials used…”

Amy DeLap, Gallery owner

A new exhibition by Robin Crocker opens July 5 at Art Space Vincennes, Vincennes, IN. The exhibition features 30 two and three dimensional mixed media pieces and will be on display until August 24.

In the exhibition, ‘REVOLVE’, Robin Crocker employs both literary and mathematical language to craft images and objects that bridge the gap between cerebral and tactile experience. Vessel-like sculptures composed of wrapping text draw viewers into an orbit around the pieces. Images emerge from the patterns of letters and texture to illuminate the text.

“Crocker’s work challenges the viewer to unlock the text, and to consider how its meaning is delivered and enhanced by the materials used and the physical construct of each piece” wrote Amy DeLap, gallery owner, in the exhibition catalogue.

Crocker is an artist based in Bristol, RI. She is a graduate of Washington University’s School of Fine Art in St. Louis, MO and The Johnson Atelier Technical Institute for Sculpture. In 2018 she exhibited at The GREEN SPACE Gallery at TF Green Airport, a partnership between the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation. Her work was included in the group show, WORD: Text in Contemporary Art at the Jamestown Art Center. Art Space Vincennes gallery owners, Amy DeLap and Andrew Jendrzejewski, invited Crocker to exhibit her first solo show at their Vincennes, Indiana gallery this summer.

Viewers will encounter ancient texts from The Diamond Sutra, contemporary poetry of E. E. Cummings, May Swenson, and Rainer Maria Rilke along side a synopsis of special and general relativity. Nature contributes to the overall tone of the show where raw materials - rich golds and rusting steel and bronze - allow time and chemical reaction to lend color and texture to the work.
